Volunteers - Academic Mentor Information

 

 

Long Beach BLAST recruits college students to volunteer as Academic Mentors twice a year (on a semester basis) during the months of September and February. The majority of our mentors volunteer through a specific college course, however we encourage all interested volunteers to contact BLAST. Mentors typically begin their placement as soon as the recruitment season ends (October and March, respectively) and end before final exams commence (usually early December and mid May).

Pre-Placement Requirements:
   - Volunteer Application including references
   - Live Scan Fingerprinting (DOJ background check)
   - TB (Tuberculosis) Test
   - BLAST training session (3 hours)
   - BLAST pre survey

Requirements While Volunteering:
   - Minimum of 15-16 total volunteer hours on site
   - Minimum of a 8 or 10 week placement
   - AmericaLearns weekly reflection (online)
   - Attend a BLAST workshop OR serve an extra two hours on-site with your mentee
   - BLAST post survey online

Step 2: Send your completed Volunteer Application

Step 3: Sign up for an Orientation and/or Training
Contact your appropriate Volunteer Program Coordinator to sign up for an Orientation, Training, or both. Orientation/Training times and locations vary and have limited space, so please contact (by email or phone) your Volunteer Program Coordinator to sign up
